European Tour Journal - Day 4 - Aalborg

Day 3, Day 1 & Day 2

Day 4 (December 29th): 1000Fryd in Aalborg, Denmark

If there's a lot of driving ahead of you, try to start your day with Entombed's version of "Night of the Vampire".

Pull into Aalborg and the venue, 1000Fryd. We load and setup merch, smoke lots of cigarettes, and check out the place. Peter, one of the proprietors and trim blond danish giant, points me to the lot a few blocks away: "Ok to park the van, left, then straight until you see the statue of bull's testicles, then straight 2 more blocks and make a right at the statue of the woman with the goose. Park behind."

On our walk back we spot "Friends american restaurant and buffet." Sorry for the bad framing, but in the photo above, Shaun is leaping for joy.

Sound check then dinner. The folks at 1000Fryd prepared us an unmatched vegan bounty, shredded beet salad, beet hummus, and a mountain of hearty breads. Everything on the plate turns a deep crimson from sweet beet juice. In the dining room is a full fridge of Thor beer for the bands, but we have our kid gloves on after the tough drinking from the night before.

Show time, No More Art is way tighter than their first show. We play and things are still a little groggy, but everyone in the audience is really stoked, the show's flyer described us as "it is American quality here. As a Harley - just faster." We get paid handsomely, apparently the good people of Denmark lawfully compensate performing artists, so much of the night's payout is government supported, helping keep places like 1000Fryd operating as strongly as they have for so long. Fucking paradise.

Shows over, we run the streets in search of pizza and to try out our algebra of Dollars/Euro/Danish Kronor. Some of us narrowly dodge the gauntlet of red-light-lulus, and a trouncing by local freshcuts. I think thats what was happening, the only words we got were "fucking yankee pussy." Check for your passport, just keep walking.

1000Fryd has what is undoubtably the cleanest bunk room in all of Europe. Immaculate construction, wayyy too many mattresses and pillows, and a huge game table that makes drinking games a pleasure. Peter comes up to talk with us for a long time about Danish isolationism, pastries, and the best way to j-brake a diesel Mercedes Sprinter. We book our ferry ticket, 300 Euro for a one way trip across the Skagerrak into Oslo.

We wake to baked goods, sandwiches, 4 litres of orange juice, and 20 beers. Snag it all, pack it into the van, and book it to the ferry for our 8 hour boat trip into the heart of Norway.

TOMORROW: 2 Nights in Oslo

European Tour Journal - Day 3 - Flensburg

We just got back from our first 3 week tour of Europe, playing shows in Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Czech Republic, but mostly Germany.

Day 3 (December 28th): Hafermarkt in Flensburg

The morning of December 28th was spent trying to back up and park a massive transport van, loading our loaner gear and rented drums, and finding a GPS that can guide us through the acute streets of Europe. I mean, everything is one way, and the directional/parking/speed signs are designed like Sesame Street props, oh and the toilets! Don't get me started! It's like a creepy futuristic America over there! How can they stand it!?

We pile in the van, bags and pillows and elbows, with the members of No More Art. They just released a really amazing 7 inch on New Dark Age records, and their show with us tonight is their first ever. We pull up to Hafermarkt, a cultural/venue/bar/housing-space in the beautiful tiny town of Flensburg. The town is eerily quiet, but by showtime the place fills up. We get fed a huge vegan pasta dinner and start drinking our free Astra, and everyone in both bands is clearly a bundle of nerves. After arguing about whether or not Germans know what rock/paper/scissors is, we rock/paper/scissors for it.

No More Art goes first, and like seasoned artists, nail it:

Then we go on:

We're the only two bands on the bill, but luckily the show is also an occasion for a local's big birthday party. As soon as we stow our gear, the place erupts into dance music. Everyone takes to the floor. We abandon the merch table and join in.

If you're ever on tour with another band, especially strangers who's first language isn't your own, alcohol becomes an essential conduit for chumming up. Also, make sure the first chorus of "Neun Und Neunzig Luftballons" is coming in. Everyone will get really familiar real fast.

Furious matches of Kicker start up, fierce arguments about the Eurozone crisis boil to a head, a tall german tries to impress all of the americans with what he calls "my really good Sam Cooke voice". All of the punx are upped. The party keeps raging.

The bunk rooms in Hafermarkt were up on the third floor, around 4 AM people start to waft up to bed. At one point there is a late night altercation between Ben, Shaun, and Will. Will's got it in his head that a Kicker opponent has it in for him, Shaun is convinced there will be a need for backup, Ben wants to go the fuck to bed. Will takes on an animal persona when late-night drunk that has earned him the nickname "The Cobra", with his razor squinted eyes, slithering knees, and a preternatural nimbleness. The man knows the tour game well.

Eventually everyone gets to bed, Ashley wakes early and makes it out to load the van just in time to step in a massive pile of dogshit. For the remainder of tour she will be known as "Fraulein Scheisse Fuss". Load in, hit the road, and head off to Denmark for our show at the legendary 1000Fryd.

TOMORROW: Aalborg

European Tour Journal - Day 1 & Day 2 - Airports & Amsterdam

We just got back from our first 3 week tour of Europe, playing shows in Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Czech Republic, but mostly Germany.

Day 1 (December 26th): Airplanes
The scariest thing about touring another continent isn't the language barrier, or the fear of shitty turnout, or losing piles of money. The scariest thing is making sure you can leave the country. After a chain of passport fuck-ups and ticket bookings, show shuffling and gear wrangling, we got all our paperwork together and orchestrated lies to get us through any possible border-guard scenario.

We slumber partied on Christmas night, getting all of our gear and bags in one place so we could start our 9 AM chain of flights from STL -> NYC -> Amsterdam -> Hamburg. The day was the usual hurry and wait of airports, but those new fucking baggage fees killed us: we brought our guitars, bass, and drum snare/cymbals for tour, and all of it had to be stowed under the plane. $300 later we were in our seats bound for Germany.

Day 2 (December 27th): Amsterdam/Hamburg
After all the anxiety, getting out of America and into Amsterdam through customs was insanely easy.
Customs: Whats your final destination? Me: Germany.
Customs: How long will you be staying? Me: 3 weeks.
Customs: Reason for your visit? Me: To meet friends, fun, drive around, we'll see your sights.
Customs: Enjoy your stay.
No strip down, no bag tossing, no grilling about the instruments and duffle of merch.

Our friend Will Kinser picked us up at the Hamburg Airport. Will is a good friend, he runs New Dark Age records, who released our recent 7". We would be playing our first and last three shows with his band No More Art. Will did the meat of the booking of this tour, pulling the strings to set up shows, find us a van, secure gear. A fucking amazing guy, right?

Will helps us lug bags and instruments to the train, and we hop to St. Pauli, to Will's flat, and catch a much deserved nap. The rented van is delivered to the doorstep, a goddamn enormous diesel Mercedes Sprinter. The thing is a beast of a tour wagon with lofted bed, seperate gear storage, rear load-out spotlight, mp3 jack. Perfect.

After warming up we run the streets of Hamburg with our new friend Nagi, Will's lady, but our future wife. She wakes us with a giant delicious dinner. We walk the docks and old city center of St. Pauli, and head to the famous Cobra Bar for unmitigated drinking, dancing, and friending up to the other members of No More Art. Play it safe, next day is the first show of tour, and No More Art's first show ever.

TOMORROW: Hafermarkt in Flensburg, Germany.
